Statement from Family of Beloved Colorado Politico/Stateswoman Katy Atkinson

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the many people who have reached out to support us during this difficult time. As many of you know Katy Atkinson passed away last Thursday, at the age of 59 after a short battle with brain cancer.

Katy begin her career in politics in 1978 on a small congressional campaign, after working on numerous campaigns she formed Katy Atkinson and Associates in 1991. Katy was a sought-after spokesperson by many news outlets. She was known for her accessibility, quick wit and her ability to work across both sides of the aisle to accomplish what she believed in.


Katy served as the spokeswoman for Desiree and Mike Davis after they lost their daughter Claire in the Arapahoe High School shooting. Katy was "a dear friend to us, as she was to many others," the Davises said in a statement Wednesday. "She stood alongside us during the most challenging period in our lives, and gracefully acted as our voice when it was difficult or impossible to speak."

Katy was a huge fan of the theater, she was a member of the Director's Society for the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and was a producing partner for Shakespeare's "As You Like It," which begins Friday at the DCPA. Because of her love for the performing arts, Katy's family has established the Katy Atkinson Memorial Fund for the Performing Arts. Donations can be made by visiting or by mailing them to:

A memorial service honoring Katy, will be will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church which is located at 1820 Broadway Street in Denver on Tuesday, September 29th at 1pm, with the internment to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery, 7777 W 29th Ave, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033.

A reception will be held from 4-6pm in the Director's Room at the Denver Performing Arts Complex which is located at 14th and Curtis in Denver. The services will be open to the public.
